Oddly enough, that's how I remember understanding it at some point, too (no doubt older than 4). It allowed me to keep straight that Veterans Day was for the soldiers who didn't die in the wars and Memorial Day was for the soldiers who did--maybe someone was reviewing holidays with Sam?
